THE DSY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
In the Development School for Youth, inner city young people between the ages of 16 and 21 learn to perform as professionals. They partner with business leaders from top companies who conduct workshops and provide training in leadership and business including resume-writing, networking, public speaking and dressing professionally. The DSY’s corporate partners then offer the DSY graduates six-week paid summer internships that prepare them to enter the workforce, pursue educational opportunities and face life challenges in new ways.
BEST PRACTICES FOR A DEVELOPMENTAL SUMMER
In DSY, the internship supervisors are asked to design the position as a project or series of projects that provide both skill and interpersonal development opportunities. Past interns have provided general administrative support, contributed to research projects and social media campaigns, assisted with meeting and event planning, and more. Internship assignments should also provide young people with opportunities to engage with the broader team, department and organization. These could include:
- Networking meetings with senior managers and executives
- Shadowing supervisors in departmental meetings and/or conference calls
- Participating in company-sponsored “Lunch & Learn” sessions
- Presenting to senior management at the end of the internship
